  • Indeed, this perspective undergirds the entire writing-across-the-disciplines and writing-in-the-discipline movements. 
Ungainly: (of a person or movement) awkward; clumsy.
  • The impenetrability of most academic prose and the ungainly structure of our journal articles may repel laypeople, but that could be seen as a necessary evil.

  • We also use words that have become common parlance with little attention to the possible meanings they may convey in diverse contexts. 
Reparation: The action of making amends for a wrong one had done, by providing payment or other assistance to those who have been wronged. 
  • Take the example of Haiti, a tiny island that was forced into paying reparations for daring to free themselves from slavery and colonial rule from France!
  • History cannot be changed, and the crimes of British Empire cannot be erased. But reparations can help address the legacy of deprivation and inequity that colonialism produced. 
Temerity: Excessive confidence and boldness; audacity 
  • The extraordinary imposition on a people to repay their slave masters for the temerity of daring to free themselves continues to reverberate in the grinding poverty and chaos in governance in Haiti.
