Parlance: A particular way of speaking or using words, especially a way common to those with a particular job or interest.
- We also use words that have become common parlance with little attention to the possible meanings they may convey in diverse contexts.
Reparation: The action of making amends for a wrong one had done, by providing payment or other assistance to those who have been wronged.
- Take the example of Haiti, a tiny island that was forced into paying reparations for daring to free themselves from slavery and colonial rule from France!
- History cannot be changed, and the crimes of British Empire cannot be erased. But reparations can help address the legacy of deprivation and inequity that colonialism produced.
Temerity: Excessive confidence and boldness; audacity
- The extraordinary imposition on a people to repay their slave masters for the temerity of daring to free themselves continues to reverberate in the grinding poverty and chaos in governance in Haiti.
